family music: little seed

i guess the basket with musical instruments is almost as popular around these parts as the box(es) of cars. my hubby and i have both been playing music actively for many years, and even though i don't pick my cello up all too often these days, the papa is regularly seen with the guitar in his hand - in the sitting room, on the bed, even in the bathroom, playing while the little man takes his bath.

we have added a new cd to our collection of family music this week, elizabeth mitchell's little seed: songs for children by woody guthrie.

as mentioned before, we love all the guthries' music (woody, arlo and sarah lee) and elizabeth mitchell has been a favourite for a long time. it's a sweet little cd, with well-known classics all presented in the familiar tender and handmade sound of the mitchell/littleton family. they made the little man sing along after just listening once, and that even though english is not the language he is growing up with (we mostly speak german at home). he has started choosing the music he wants to listen to and starting the cd player himself, so i am sure it'll be a favourite very soon!

in between listening to our cd's we love to have a little music session as well! this is when we sing songs we know by heart or we just make our own songs up, accompanied by drums, sticks, the good old harmonica - or anything that makes a bit of noise actually!

So sweet, music is an important ingredient of my childhood and I hope to pass it on to my little one as well. Smart to put all instruments in a basket. Our hand drum holds everything now and it's a little disordered pile. She favours the harmonica and the kazoo.

i agree that music is an important part of development, especially the realization that music is not only something to listen to but that it is something to make and feel.

We love music too and you will often find (and hear) my little man playing away with the instruments in his music basket...fun!

I love singing children. Even if it's off key, it is so terribly sweet. Have a lovely weekend!

Beautiful, we love it too :) 'Little Red Caboose' from Catch the Moon is Cedar's single favourite song, over and over, though we have another CD he loves too. It's by an Australian singer/songwriter, I'll bring it over for you!

xx

Isn't music one of the greatest gifts from God? It touches our hearts, no matter now old ( or young) we are. Keep up with it! Your kids got a great potential.
