"maybe geography made us friends"

2010-SylviaDanielleCopenhagen

this morning i'm thinking about friendship. i have a few very close friends. some of them i see on a weekly basis, others less often. some i grew up with, others i got to know as an adult.
i love them all, dearly.
there is one friend though, to whom i feel just as close.
we need to cross oceans in order to see each other in person.
on monday, after almost 3 years, i will see her again. and i will see her daugher, Sienna, again after more than 8 years.

there is so much on my heart, i could write and write.
but i just now remember that  beautiful article written by danielle with a few words by me thrown in. it's in the summer 2011 edition of maeve magazine, click on "me and my bestie". if you're interested.  it sums it all up pretty well.

i hope your week starts out with being with loved ones too, whether they're near or far!

I totally agree that a deep friendship doesn't necessarily depend on living close to each other (although that would be really nice...). My best friend lives way down in south-west of Germany, and we've been penfriends for 17 years now. We've been writing at least one HANDWRITTEN letter a week to each other, and more recently even some e-mails were added to that in between. Of course, we also visited each other - and met up in Berlin for a lovely sightseeing vacation. The first time I had the chance to visit her, after we first had met each other, my daughter gave me the traintickets as a present, which made the whole trip so much more precious to me.

To Danielle:
The article is so moving! What a precious friend you've become to us, too. Thank you for visiting again. We cherish every moment with you and sweet Sienna.

Thank you for this beautiful post. I also went and re-read the article, it has been awhile! We are having a gorgeous time here in Hamburg, relaxing and hanging out, chatting and walking. And it is so sweet to see Spencer and Sienna building a funny little pseudo-little-brother relationship! Cute little people :)

I'm genuinely chuffed to be able to sponsor the current European junket, knowing how meaningful it is for your friendship. Not to mention the amazing memories Sienna will come back with.

Thanks for looking after my girls so well Sylvia and family!
