the writer's space

i have been enjoying the posts by lori every monday on project based homeschooling for adults. they make me think, re-think, evaluate what i do, and when and how i do it. last week, the post was about spaces. there is a list of questions to ask yourself about the space you live/play/work/create in, and what it says about you.

the day after reading the post, i walked around our apartment and snapped photos with my phone of our  spaces.

so who lives here?

readers, booklovers, learners, music lovers, a knitter, crafters, builders, nature collectors (the scrapbooker and the mixed media artist have been stored in a cabinet for the last couple of months, but that's okay!)

but where is the writer?

we have a lovely turn-of-the-century desk with a nice big screen on it. it is where i type (not necessarily write, some are first drafted in a journal) my blog posts and upload and edit my photos. it is a workspace, one that you can tell is being used by several members of the family.

but where is the writer?

i realized, i needed a space. just as lori's post encouraged me to, a space that works for me in this season of my life right now. so i got to work. i cleared the lowest shelf of our kitchen board right by the table, with a chair infront of the heater (great place in winter!). it felt good to make space for my space. the kitchen is the first place i go to in the morning. i wait for the kettle. i make coffee. i make (endless) snacks. i wash the dishes, unload the dishwasher. we wait for muffins/banana bread/stew/roasts to be finished. there are so many pockets of time (even if just minutes) that i can spend here - writing.

yes, this is my space now. it says "write!"

(i just started this awesome Q and A a Day: 5-Year Journal yesterday. very excited about it!)

LOVE the Q&A book!
It's so cute and I love almost everything designed for writing. When in a stationary you can almost hear my inner arguing whether I need something/everything or not :).

love love love that you shared this — i will put a link in the forum and on my facebook page to share it with the others working on this series! :)

you put it in a great spot, too — right in front of you where you can’t help but see it. and it’s so beautiful and inspirational. love. <3

I loved Lori's post as well. I still haven't had a chance to go through our space as she suggested but I'm waiting for a chunk of time to be able to. I can't wait!

your home is so cozy, and i love what it says about all of you. adding a writing corner is great, i hope you'll be able to make more and more time to write!

it has helped me with my creative process quite a bit to have things in one space, all together, just as lori proposed. this way it's not such a great hassle to work on something for a few moments if that's all i've got. now that i have a cat though i need to be better at putting things back or else she get's to play with it... :)

Beautiful and inspiring post, Sylvia! Thank you for sharing, you've got me thinking about where I write.

This is such a great idea -- and excellent timing! I've been thinking more about how my desk needs to be a place of inspiration, not just a place where I "put stuff'.

I like your space is right where you can get to it when you only have a minute or two. I find it so interesting to see other people's work spaces .
