a new bed for the little man

spencer turned 2 last week and just by coincidence around that time i discovered this gorgeous antique bed on the german equivalent of craig's list. i was pretty sure we were too late for it, but.... some other people interested in the bed never showed up so we had a look at it on saturday evening and fell in love with it right away.

it's the perfect style of a bed for our kind of apartment (turn-of-the-century), with the broad wooden floor boards and other typical features, it just blends in so well. i also love how well it goes with the antique linen cupboard we've had for a few years (it didn't have any glass in the doors anymore, so i attached this cute fabric to them instead).

we had used a crib before, although most nights he would spend the second half of the night co-sleeping with us. he has been sleeping through the nights for a couple of months (after i night-weaned, actually), but there have always been stretches of days when he didn't. funny enough, he took the transition quite well and slept through the first night in his new bed. it was quite a milestone this morning when he didn't need to call for us to lift him out of bed, but just jumped out himself and walked out of the room...

i also like that this style of bed gives me a chance to showcase some of the lovely handmade things he has, like the flannel and cotton fleece blanket, the pillow cases and the stuffed owl that i made, the handmade teddy he got from two friends and the little handmade stool another friend made which we use as a bedside table for now. i have to admit though that i don't make the beds very often :-P but for guests (both on the blog and in real life): yes!

he has a big, colourful rug in the middle of the room to play on, but i'm thinking he will need something soft and cozy to place his feet on when he gets out of bed (don't you just love that too? i have a sheepskin and it makes for a great start to the day to dig my feet in it for a few seconds). maybe i'll be brave and start a rag rug, as it's been on my mind for a while. we'll see!
thanks for coming by today!

This is a really nice bed you found! I liked that when Spencer was here he at times came out of the bedroom all by himself. It's such a sweet surprise to have him quietly pop up in the room when you least expect him.

All these handmade items in the photos look so cozy. I still feel bonded to the linen closet though, you know where to find it in case it 'disappears' one day... ;-)

So cute! We did the same thing this weekend. My little man turned 2 August 29th and I have been putting it off. I'm not ready for him to be a big boy:( You did a great job on his room, it's adorable! Barefoot Mama

The bed really fits into Spencer's room - and to imagine him just jumping out of it by himself makes me smile.
Can you remember, when all 4 of us transported that cupboard on the roofrack of the car??? Well, time flies by......
