new project - composting organic materials

after a long time of talking about it we finally built a compost bin yesterday. i think it's funny that coincidentally, just the day before, kelly from polkadot lane and her husband were also thinking of either buying a compost bin or a worm farm. they went for the worm farm which is a neat thing as well. but since my husband was looking forward to building a compost bin for such a long time we stuck with that plan. the idea of raising worms is quite appealing to me still. maybe that will be a project for next spring.

one of the main uses for our compost will be conditioning our soil and fertilizing our plants. this link provides some tips and good reasons to compost organic material that otherwise would go to waste at your house.

i know many of you grow your own gardens. are you composting as well? do you have any tips for a newbie?

We are big composters here. My tip is no bones, meat or dairy. A healthy compost doesn't smell so use your nose when turning it. Your plants are going to love you!

We just have a pile out in the back pasture. An actual bin would sure be nice :).

We have a compost pile so all kitchen scraps go there - no dairy or meat though. Apparently you shouldn't put bread in it, but I always do as I think the birds come and eat it anyway. I dug into the compost heap the other day to find some nice soil underneath, there was plenty of lovely humus and lots of happy worms in there - two for one!

I'd like to build a 3 bay bin type thing, though, so that I can get some movement happening through the different compost stages. One of those long term to-do ideas :)

I think we are going to do a compost bin as well! Being a biggish family, the worms aren't going to be able to keep up with our food scraps, so one of each will be the go :-)

We're not composting meat or dairy either.
Have fun!

We had one when I was a kid.

Now we are city living though and I don't think it'd work on the balcony!

It's nice to throw stuff in it I imagine :)
